On 31 January 2026 a decade of smart plugs, light switches, bulbs, motion sensors, baby monitors and even air purifiers quietly went dumb. That was the day Belkin shut down the cloud behind its Wemo line and removed the Wemo app from the stores. Every Wemo feature that leaned on a remote server, from remote access to voice control through Alexa or Google Home and most cloud automations, simply stopped working. Only a small group of newer Thread-based units survived, and then only for owners who had already paired them into Apple Home before the cut-off.

Wemo was not a freak event. In June 2025 the Sengled bulb cloud fell over for four days and left thousands of lamps unresponsive. Logitech gave owners of its POP buttons a fortnight of warning before the switches lost all function. Neato robot vacuums were orphaned when their servers closed. The pattern has hardened into a design rule: a cloud-dependent device does not outlive the company that made it. Writers now call the past two years the great bricking, and for anyone specifying the systems inside a home it has become the most important story in the category.

The Home Is Infrastructure, Not a Subscription

For an interior this is not a gadget problem but an architectural one. Lighting scenes, motorised blinds, heating zones and entry sensors are increasingly wired into the way a room is meant to work: the dimmed evening layer, the away mode, the bathroom that warms before you wake. When those behaviours live on a distant server, the room borrows its intelligence and can have it repossessed on a press release. A house is meant to last decades; the cloud account behind it rarely lasts five years. That mismatch is the whole problem.

The fix is not to abandon the smart home but to change where its brain sits. Local control means the logic runs on the home network itself, so a switch talks to a bulb directly over Wi-Fi or a low-power radio without a round trip to a data centre. The commands are faster, they keep working when the broadband drops and, crucially, they keep working when the manufacturer walks away.

Matter and Thread Finally Grow Up

The reason 2026 is the turning point is that the plumbing is at last mature. Matter, the interoperability standard backed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance and by Apple, Google, Amazon and hundreds of other vendors, reached version 1.4 at the end of 2024 and, after three slow years, is the first release that works across most everyday categories. Its core promise is local by default: once a Matter device is set up it speaks directly to controllers on your network rather than phoning home.

Underneath it, Thread supplies a self-healing low-power mesh in which mains-powered devices relay for battery ones, so coverage improves as you add hardware rather than degrading. A Thread border router, now built into many speakers, hubs and televisions, bridges that mesh to the wider network. At CES 2026 Eve underlined where this is heading with a Matter-over-Thread thermostat designed to run with no cloud, no subscription and no account at all: the device and the home hub hold the intelligence between them, and nothing needs a server to turn the heating down.

The Hub Becomes the Insurance Policy

The other half of a durable smart home is a local coordinator, and the clearest example is Home Assistant. It is open-source software that runs on hardware as modest as a small mini-PC or a single-board computer, with more than a thousand built-in integrations reaching devices and protocols across the industry. Its significance here is structural: Home Assistant is owned by the Open Home Foundation, a non-profit set up in 2024 on the principles of privacy, choice and sustainability and funded chiefly by Nabu Casa. Because the foundation cannot be bought or sold, the platform cannot be acquired and switched off the way a venture-backed app can.

That governance turns out to be practical, not ideological. The abandoned Wemo plugs are a case in point: because Home Assistant has spoken to them over the local network for years, a factory-reset unit can be brought back with a small utility and kept running long after Belkin servers vanished. A hub you own becomes the insurance policy that keeps orphaned hardware, and the routines built around it, alive.

Designing for the Long Now

The takeaway for a considered home is a short specification test applied before anything is installed. Ask whether a device still does its core job with the internet unplugged; favour anything that carries the Matter logo and runs over Thread; and give the home a single local hub that owns the automations, so no one brand can hold the house hostage. Electronic waste is the quiet subtext, because a plug that dies with its vendor is landfill while one that keeps switching for fifteen years is not.

None of this makes the home less connected. It makes the connection point local, private and durable, an intelligence the house keeps rather than rents. In a field that has spent a decade chasing the newest cloud feature, the most forward-looking move of 2026 is to build the home so it still works when the cloud is gone.
