Time as Material: How Frida Escobedo Builds the Day Into a Wall
Newly named the Cooper Hewitt 2026 National Design Award laureate for architecture, the Mexican architect keeps returning to one device — the celosia breeze-wall — to make sunlight, shadow and the slow occupation of space the true subject of her buildings.
A laureate who designs the day
In February 2026, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, named Frida Escobedo the winner of its National Design Award for Architecture, the most closely watched American honour in the field. The citation could have leaned on the obvious headline — that Escobedo, at the helm of a Mexico City and New York studio she founded in 2006, is the architect chosen to design the Metropolitan Museum of Art's new wing for modern and contemporary art, the first woman to design a wing in the institution's 154-year history. Instead the recognition reads as a verdict on a method. Across two decades of residential buildings, adaptive-reuse renovations, temporary pavilions, public sculpture and books, Escobedo has kept circling one idea: that a building's real material is time, and that the job of form is to make time legible.
The lattice that tells the hour
Her signature instrument is the celosia — the perforated breeze-wall that recurs in Mexican, Spanish, Middle Eastern and North African building, a screen of repeated blocks that filters air and light without ever fully closing. In most hands the celosia is a climate device or a decorative flourish. In Escobedo's it is closer to a sundial. Because the lattice throws a shadow that thickens and thins as the sun crosses it, a wall built this way is never the same wall twice: the pattern on the floor at nine in the morning is not the pattern at five, and a visitor who wants to read the space has to move through it. Presence and duration, not a single photogenic elevation, become the point. That is why the same device can carry a Cuernavaca museum, a London park pavilion and a Fifth Avenue art wing without ever repeating itself — the celosia is a grammar for registering change, and change is different in every place.
La Tallera: a ruin made to show its age
The clearest early statement of the method is La Tallera Siqueiros in Cuernavaca, completed in 2012, Escobedo's reworking of the house-and-studio the muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros left to the public. Rather than restore the compound to a frozen moment, she wrapped its mismatched buildings in a single skin of perforated concrete block, rotated two of Siqueiros's giant murals to face the street, and opened the courtyard onto the neighbouring plaza so the museum bled into the town. Critics read the result as a building designed to make social time evident — the accumulation of use, the spontaneous ways people occupy a shared space, the relationships between them. The celosia skin does the environmental work of shading and ventilation, but its deeper function is narrative: it lets the old fabric keep aging honestly behind a screen that never pretends the past is intact.
The Serpentine, pivoted to a meridian
In 2018 Escobedo became one of the youngest architects to design London's Serpentine Pavilion, and she used the commission to compress her whole argument into a single summer. The pavilion was a courtyard of dark British-made cement roof tiles, stacked into celosia lattices, its inner axis pivoted off the gallery's own grid to align with the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. A shallow triangular pool traced the roof's edge, and mirrored surfaces above threw daylight back down, so the enclosure filled and emptied of reflection as clouds moved overhead. It was, in effect, a clock built out of colonial materials — English roofing tiles, the meridian that once organised world time — turned into an instrument for watching a single English day go by. Nothing about it was nostalgic; everything about it was about now, and the way now keeps sliding into then.
The Met, in limestone
The Tang Wing, unveiled in late 2024 and due to open around 2030, is the method at civic scale. Escobedo has proposed a limestone celosia for the Fifth Avenue and Central Park elevations — a stone lattice, quiet against the Beaux-Arts bulk of the museum, that will let filtered daylight into the galleries and shift its shadow-pattern across the day and the seasons. The choice answers the hardest problem in museum design, the tyranny of the flat white box, by insisting that even a gallery for fragile modern art can be tied to weather and hour. It is of a piece with her other recent commissions — co-designing the Centre Pompidou's renovation in Paris, and adapting a modernist landmark in Doha for Qatar's foreign ministry — where the work is less about the new object than about how an old one is allowed to keep living.
Why the jury is right
What unites these projects, and what the Cooper Hewitt award effectively certifies, is a refusal of the timeless. Escobedo's buildings are engineered to weather, to be occupied, to change with the light — to show their age rather than deny it. The celosia is her way of building that conviction into a wall: a surface that stays porous to sun, air, shadow and people, and is therefore never finished. In an architectural culture still fond of the sealed, image-ready icon, hers is a quietly radical position — that the most durable thing a building can offer is a good way to watch time go by.
