The Patina Is the Metal: Why Only Unlacquered Brass Can Be Polished Back and Start Over
Every 2026 trend list calls unlacquered brass a living finish and then explains it as a warmer gold. It is not a colour at all but a solid copper-zinc surface left bare to oxidise, which is exactly why you can polish it back to bright and restart the clock, and why a chipped lacquer or worn PVD coating never can.
A living finish is a chemistry, not a colour
Open almost any 2026 trend report and the same two words keep surfacing: living finish. They are nearly always attached to unlacquered brass, and nearly always explained as if they meant a warmer, softer gold. That is the wrong idea. A living finish is not a shade. It is a description of what is physically happening on the surface of the metal, namely solid brass left bare, with nothing sealing it off from the air, water and skin it meets every day. Because nothing sits between the alloy and the world, the alloy reacts. The colour a piece wears a year after it is fitted was not chosen from a swatch; it is a chemical record of how that piece has been touched, wiped, splashed and left alone.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, with the zinc running anywhere from roughly five to forty percent of the mix. That composition is the entire plot. Left exposed, the surface starts to shift within hours as a faint dulling of the shine, browns over the following weeks, and given years in the right air can settle into the deep olive and amber that old door furniture wears. None of that is decay in the way a rusting steel hinge decays. It is patina, and on brass it is unusually well behaved.
Zinc goes first, and that is why the patina holds
The reason brass ages gracefully rather than corroding away is a quiet piece of electrochemistry. Zinc is more reactive than copper, so at the surface it oxidises preferentially, in a process called dezincification. That first thin zinc-oxide layer partially shields the copper sitting beneath it, which slows the whole reaction down. Pure copper races to the blue-green of a weathered roof; brass, held back by its zinc, moves far more slowly and tends to stop at golden-brown and amber instead. The patina, in other words, is largely self-limiting: the early oxide is part of what protects the metal underneath from going further, faster.
Conditions set the pace. Humidity above about sixty percent accelerates the change noticeably, and every ten-degree-Celsius rise in temperature roughly doubles the rate of oxidation. Airborne sulphur compounds and chlorides, whether city pollution, a gas hob or coastal salt air, push it along faster still. This is why the same brass pull can look barely touched in a dry, still guest bathroom and richly mottled in a working kitchen within a single season.
Lacquer and PVD freeze the clock, and can only fail
Set against the living finish are the two ways of stopping it. Lacquer is a thin clear film sprayed over polished brass to lock in the bright showroom gold. It works, for a while. But in the steamy, wet, high-contact zones where brass is most wanted, a kitchen faucet or a much-used drawer pull, the film eventually chips, flakes or yellows, and once it starts to go it goes patchily and is very hard to repair evenly. PVD, or physical vapour deposition, is the tougher modern answer: a metallic layer bonded to the fixture at a molecular level, far more scratch- and tarnish-resistant than lacquer and engineered never to change. A PVD tap on day three thousand looks like it did on day one.
Both share a hidden catch. A coating can only wear; it cannot restart. And most crucially, neither is any use over plated hardware, a base metal carrying only a thin skin of brass. That skin is too shallow to develop any real depth, and at the points hands actually touch it wears through to reveal the cheaper metal underneath. A living finish only lives if the brass is solid all the way down.
The surface you can reset forever
This is the real distinction, and it is easy to miss under all the talk of warmth and character. Because unlacquered brass is solid alloy through its whole thickness, you can polish it back to bright gold whenever you want and the patina simply begins again. A lemon-and-baking-soda paste or a proper brass polish takes it back to new; a fresh scratch, left alone, blends into the next round of ageing rather than standing out. That full recoverability belongs to living finishes alone. A scratched PVD surface or a worn patch of lacquer cannot be undone the same way, because the damage is in the coating, not the metal, and there is no polishing a coating back.
So the decision is not gold against gold, or shiny against matte. It is this: do you want a surface frozen at its best single day, or one you can reset for the rest of the building's life?
Reading the room it ages in
Placement is everything, because the patina reads the room. On a faucet it deepens first around the spout and the handles, where water, soap and skin oils gather; on cabinetry it darkens at the pull and along the leading edge of the door. In a kitchen or bath, fingerprints and water spots can appear within weeks, and there the choice becomes a daily one. Wipe and polish them away for a crisp look, or leave them and let the metal keep its diary. A thin coat of carnauba wax or mineral oil slows the whole process for anyone who wants the ageing gentler.
The only genuine mistake is a mismatch of expectation and place: buying unlacquered brass and being annoyed when it will not stay bright, or buying lacquered or PVD and hoping it will one day look old. In a year when trend forecasters keep naming patina and imperfection as the new marks of quality, and texture as the status once carried by shine, unlacquered brass is the clearest case of the idea: a finish that treats being used not as damage, but as the point.
