The Wall Is Composed, Not Drawn: How Wang Shu's Wapan Turns Demolished Villages Into a Facade
Wang Shu won the Pritzker for buildings clad in salvaged brick and tile, but his real invention is a method — the revived wapan wall, composed by hand on site — and it is about to shape the 2027 Venice Biennale.
The building everyone photographs, and the method no one sees
When Wang Shu became the first Chinese architect to win the Pritzker Prize in 2012, the image that travelled was the Ningbo History Museum: a cracked, tilting cliff of a building, its walls a dense mosaic of grey brick and terracotta tile. It reads as a mountain dropped into a flat new district. But the mountain is the least interesting thing about it. What Wang Shu and his partner Lu Wenyu actually built was a method — a way of assembling a wall that lets incompatible salvage become a single surface — and that method, not the silhouette, is the reason the museum exists at all.
The method has a name older than the studio: wapan, roughly a tile-shard wall. It is a folk technique from Zhejiang province, developed by farmers along a typhoon coast who could not wait for new material. After a storm they rebuilt from whatever the storm left — brick, roof tile, stone, fragments of every size and age — packing the pieces into a wall bound with thin lime mortar. It was a technique of poverty and speed, and by the time Wang Shu found it, it was nearly dead. The masons who still knew it were old men.
The method behind the mountain
A conventional wall is drawn before it is built: a coursing, a module, a bond pattern the mason follows. Wapan cannot be drawn, because its material refuses a module. At Ningbo the walls carry more than twenty distinct types of reclaimed brick and tile, salvaged from around thirty villages that were demolished as the surrounding region was rebuilt — some of the pieces said to be a thousand years old. No two are quite the same size. There is no course to follow and no unit to repeat.
So the wall is composed on site, by hand, by the mason. Wang Shu gives the workers a rough intention and a heap of sorted debris, and each length of wall becomes a decision made in the moment about what fits against what — a large flat tile here to bridge a gap, a run of thin ones there to level up, a stone where the load asks for it. The Pritzker jury, describing his collaborations with construction workers, called the result an element of unpredictability that gives the buildings a freshness and spontaneity. That unpredictability is not a style applied to the wall. It is the direct trace of many hands solving the same small puzzle differently, thousands of times across one facade.
Structurally the wapan skin does light work. It is not the building's frame; behind it sits a concrete and structural core. The shard wall is a thick rainscreen and cladding — which is precisely what frees it. Relieved of carrying the floors, it can carry something else: the material itself, in all its mismatched specificity.
Why the debris had to be reused
It would have been far simpler to press new tiles to a uniform size and lay them in neat courses. Wang Shu refused, and the refusal is the argument. In the years he built these projects, China was demolishing its old towns at enormous speed to make room for new construction. The salvage was not scarce; it was a flood. At the Xiangshan campus of the China Academy of Art, built between 2001 and 2007, the studio laid more than two million reclaimed tiles of different ages and sizes, pulled from traditional houses demolished across Zhejiang, over the roofs and walls.
Reuse at that scale is a resource argument before it is an aesthetic one. Every salvaged tile is a tile not fired again, a piece of embodied labour and embodied carbon kept in service instead of crushed to rubble. But Wang Shu makes a second claim that the smooth new tile cannot: the wall remembers. The fragments in it were roofs and walls that once sheltered people, and packed together they carry that history on the outside of a public building, where a demolished village would otherwise leave no trace at all.
Amateur means the craftsman decides
The studio is called Amateur Architecture Studio, and the name is not modesty. Wang Shu has said that being an artisan or a craftsman is, for him, almost the same as being an amateur — a builder who works from spontaneity, craft skill and tradition rather than from an abstract concept. Between 1990 and 1997 he stepped out of the professional system entirely to learn vernacular construction — rammed earth, timber, masonry — from craftsmen around Hangzhou. Those seven years are the thing embedded in wapan.
This is why the method matters more than the picture. A drawn wall puts the decision in the architect's office; the wapan wall puts it back in the mason's hands on the scaffold. The building is not fully designed until it is built, and it is built by the people the profession usually treats as executors of someone else's lines.
From the demolished village to Venice
The argument is about to get its largest stage. In late 2025 Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu were named curators of the 2027 Venice Architecture Biennale — the first Chinese architects to direct it — under the plainspoken title Do Architecture. Their stated focus is the one wapan has always carried: existing materials, the traces of ordinary lives, the craftsmanship of the artisan on the site. The tile-shard wall was never only a way to clad a museum. It was a working prototype of an argument about where a building should come from, who should decide, and what a wall can be made to remember.
