The Garden Built as an Ecosystem: How Phyto Studio Won 2026 Firm of the Year
Named the 2026 ASLA Firm of the Year, Phyto Studio won not for a signature look but for a method — building plantings as dense, layered plant communities that shade out their own weeds and drink only the rain.
A Landscape Firm Wins on an Idea, Not a Signature
Most firms that reach the top of their profession are known for a look. Phyto Studio, named the 2026 Firm of the Year by the American Society of Landscape Architects, is known instead for a method. The Arlington, Virginia practice — founded by Thomas Rainer, Claudia West and Melissa Rainer — took the discipline's highest firm honor for work that reads less like decoration and more like applied ecology: gardens, campuses, waterfronts and civic plazas where the planting is engineered to behave like a wild plant community while still looking composed. The award recognizes a body of work that has changed how the profession plants, and the change is specific enough to describe in a sentence.
From Specimen to Community
Traditional horticulture treats a plant as an object to be placed, like a chair. You choose a shrub, dig a hole, set it in a bed, and surround it with a sea of bark mulch to keep the weeds down. Rainer and West, whose 2015 book Planting in a Post-Wild World became the field's reference text, argue that this is exactly backwards. In the wild, plants never grow as isolated individuals ringed by bare ground; they grow in dense, interlocking populations that cover every inch of soil. Their whole practice starts from that observation. A planting, in their view, is not a collection of specimens but a community — a set of compatible species chosen to fit together and to fit the site.
That reframing sounds gentle, but it dismantles the economics of a conventional landscape. Bare mulch is not a design; it is a maintenance contract. Every square foot of exposed soil is an invitation for weeds, and someone has to be paid to pull them and to top up the mulch each spring. Phyto's answer is to fill that ground with plants instead.
The Layers, in Percentages
The signature technique is designing in vertical layers, and the studio is unusually precise about the proportions. At the top sits a structural layer — trees, shrubs and tall architectural perennials that give a scheme its bones and its winter silhouette. It is a surprisingly small share of the whole, roughly five to fifteen percent. Below it comes the seasonal theme layer, the part most people think of as the garden: the drifts of flowering perennials that carry the show from spring into autumn, making up something like thirty to forty percent of the composition.
The layer that does the real work is the one nobody notices. Beneath the flowers, a ground-cover layer of low grasses, sedges and spreading forbs — as much as half of all the plants — knits into a living mat across the soil. Rainer and West call it green mulch. Planted densely, often on an eighteen-inch grid during establishment, it closes the ground plane so completely that weed seeds never find the light and open earth they need to germinate. The mulch bag is replaced by biology. Function and beauty are stacked in the same square foot.
Stress as an Asset
The second discipline is matching plants to a site's conditions rather than fighting them. Instead of amending soil and irrigating to make a difficult spot hospitable to fussy plants, Phyto reads the light, the soil and the rainfall a place actually offers and assembles species that already thrive under exactly that stress. A dry, gravelly, sun-blasted verge is not a problem to be corrected; it is a specification. Plants native to lean, dry ground want that site. The result is a landscape that needs little or no supplemental water once established — a decisive advantage as summers lengthen and municipalities ration irrigation.
Legible Frames
A community-based planting is denser and looser than a clipped border, and that can read as neglect if it is not handled carefully. Rainer and West are candid that our culture rewards tidy landscapes, and that ecological plantings fail socially when they look messy. Their fix is to frame the wildness: a mown edge, a clean path, a crisp architectural border, a bench placed with intention. These cues of care tell the eye that the exuberance inside the frame is deliberate. The planting can be genuinely wild in its function while remaining legibly designed to the people who pass it.
Management, Not Maintenance
Because a designed plant community is a living system, it is never finished. Phyto treats care as management rather than maintenance — less mowing and mulching, more editing. A steward learns to read which species are gaining and which are fading, removes a plant that is bullying its neighbors, adds one where a gap opens, and lets the community shift with the seasons and the years. The garden is expected to change; the design accounts for it.
Where You Can Stand Inside It
The ideas are visible in the studio's public work. At the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, Phyto reworked the historic Friendship Garden into a stylized savanna of ecological species, layering the planting and stripping out tired hedges to model what a bolder home garden might look like. There is the Pollinator and Bird Garden at Penn State's Arboretum, meadows for botanical gardens and private estates, and a role on the transformational master plan for Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. Each is a place a visitor can stand inside the theory and feel it working.
Why It Lands Now
Phyto's award arrives at a moment when the pressures on landscape are converging: hotter, drier summers, collapsing insect populations, and shrinking maintenance budgets. A planting that shades out its own weeds, drinks only the rain, feeds pollinators and forgives a lighter touch answers all of those at once. The firm did not win for inventing a plant or a style. It won for proving, across two decades and dozens of high-visibility sites, that a garden can be built as an ecosystem — and be more beautiful, not less, for it.
