The small number on the back of a paint chip predicts a room's brightness better than any colour name, but only as a relative figure, set by the trim, floor and daylight around it.

The number that outranks the name

Every paint chip carries two pieces of information. One is a name, chosen by a marketing department to sell a mood. The other is a small number, often printed on the back, that reveals almost everything the name hides: the light reflectance value, or LRV. It runs from 0, a theoretical black that reflects nothing, to 100, a pure white that reflects everything, and it states the percentage of visible light the colour bounces back into the room. Sherwin-Williams prints it on the reverse of every chip; most other brands publish it online. Learn to read it and you stop being surprised by your own walls.

The reason LRV matters more than the name is that lightness, not hue, is what the eye uses to judge how open or closed a room feels. A greige at LRV 60 and a pale blue at LRV 60 will make a room feel roughly equally bright, even though they are different colours. Two greiges that look like cousins on the fan deck, one at LRV 48 and one at LRV 66, will produce two completely different rooms. The name tells you nothing about which is which. The number tells you immediately.

What the ranges mean

As a working map: colours above about 70 read as genuinely light and keep a room feeling open. From roughly 50 to 70 you get a mid-tone with real presence that still holds onto air and brightness. Between 30 and 50 the colour starts to set the mood of the room rather than simply lighten it, and it needs decent daylight to look its best. Below 30 you are in deliberately dark, enveloping territory, wonderful in the right room and oppressive in the wrong one.

Those bands are guides, not guarantees, because LRV describes the paint, not the situation the paint lands in. And the situation is where most disappointments are born.

Why the wall never matches the chip

A two-inch chip and a four-metre wall are two different visual events. Colour intensifies as its area grows, so a soft, uncertain greige on the card resolves into a decidedly beige or decidedly grey wall once it covers a room. That alone catches people out. But the larger trap is context. On the fan deck your colour sits against white card and a row of other paints. On the wall it sits against your floor, your trim, your cabinets and your sofa, and every one of those surfaces pushes your perception of it.

This is the point most guides miss: LRV behaves as a relative figure, not an absolute one. Paint a wall at LRV 50 and frame it with trim at LRV 85, and the wall will look markedly darker than the same paint framed with trim at LRV 70, because the eye reads the wall against its brightest neighbour. Change the trim and you change the wall without touching it. The number on the chip is real, but what you see is always the number minus its surroundings.

The thirty-point rule

Designers who work on accessible and dementia-friendly interiors have turned this relativity into a hard tool. British guidance and standards such as Approved Document M and BS 8493 ask for a difference of at least 30 LRV points between adjacent surfaces, a door against its frame, a grab rail against its wall, a floor against a skirting, so that people with low vision can read where one surface ends and the next begins. The rule of thumb holds that a gap of roughly 20 points is the minimum before a boundary starts to disappear, and 30 is the confident target, measured where light levels reach around 200 lux.

You do not need a washroom to use the idea. If you want trim to frame a wall crisply, give it a 30-point LRV lead. If you want a quiet, drenched, boundary-less room, do the opposite and keep every surface within a few points of the others, so the eye finds no line to measure by. Colour drenching and barrier-free contrast are the same LRV principle run in opposite directions.

Orientation moves the number

Light reflectance assumes light to reflect. A north-facing room in the northern hemisphere receives cool, indirect light for most of the day, and it will drag a colour visibly darker and greyer than its LRV promises; a 50-LRV grey that looked safe on the chip can read as heavy and cold. South light does the reverse and can wash a high-LRV colour out entirely, which is why many designers avoid the brightest whites, above roughly LRV 80, in strong sun, where they flare and lose all their subtlety. The same paint is a different paint on opposite sides of the same house.

What LRV will not tell you

Two things sit outside the number. The first is sheen. LRV measures the colour's pigment, but the finish decides how much light the surface actually throws back: a flat finish reflects only a few percent, while high gloss can return 60 to 90 percent, so the same colour reads softer in matt and sharper, brighter and more reflective in gloss. The second is undertone. LRV is a quantity, not a hue, so two colours at identical LRV can lean warm or cool; a pink-white and a blue-white at LRV 78 behave very differently in cool north light, where the warm one stays soft and the cool one turns clinical.

So use LRV as the first filter, never the last. Read the number to know how light the colour will sit and how it will contrast with its neighbours; then paint a large sample, live with it against your own floor and trim, and look at it in morning, midday and evening light before you commit. The number tells you where to start. The room tells you whether you were right.
