The roof is the wrong thing to buy

When people plan an outdoor room the instinct is to buy coverage — a roof, a lid, something overhead to keep the sun off. It is the obvious instinct and it is the wrong one. A terrace's comfort in July and its usefulness in December are not decided by whether there is a roof, but by the angle of what sits overhead relative to where the sun happens to be. The adjustable louvred pergola — the aluminium slats that pivot from flat to nearly vertical, sold as bioclimatic — is really just a way to keep changing that angle as the sun moves. Once you see it that way, the whole logic of outdoor shading falls into place, and so does the reason a solid roof so often disappoints.

The sun is generous in summer and stingy in winter

The trick that makes seasonal shading possible is that the sun does not travel the same path across the sky through the year. At mid-latitudes the midday sun in high summer rides steeply overhead — roughly sixty to seventy degrees above the horizon — while at the winter solstice it barely clears the rooftops, sitting closer to twenty or twenty-five degrees. That gap of forty-odd degrees is the entire opportunity. A horizontal element overhead intercepts the steep summer beam easily, because the light is coming down almost vertically onto it. The same element lets the low winter sun slide underneath, because that light arrives almost sideways. It is why a well-sized roof overhang can shade a south window completely in August and flood it with sun in January without moving a single part. The louvred pergola simply makes that fixed geometry adjustable, so it can be tuned rather than sized once and left alone.

The cut-off angle, without the trigonometry

Designers call the governing number the cut-off angle: the blade tilt at which a slat's upper edge lines up with the lower edge of the slat above it, so no direct sun can pass between them. Rotate the blades past that point and the roof reads as closed to the sun even though air still moves through the gaps. What matters is that the cut-off angle you need depends on how high the sun is. To block a seventy-degree noon sun you need only a gentle tilt, and the blades can stay fairly open, keeping the space bright and airy. To fight a low sun the blades must swing much steeper, trading away light and view to hold the shade. On a facade the same idea appears as the brise-soleil, the fixed or adjustable fin system Le Corbusier popularised in the 1930s; louvre angles there typically land somewhere between thirty and sixty degrees depending on latitude and orientation, and the calculation is identical.

South wants a horizontal blade; west needs another answer

Orientation decides which way the blades should run, and this is where solid roofs and naive pergolas fail. A south-facing space is dominated by high midday sun, which horizontal slats handle beautifully. But an east or west exposure catches the sun low on the horizon at breakfast and again at dinner — precisely the hours people most want to sit outside. Low sun drives straight in under any horizontal roof, no matter how deep it is; horizontal blades are simply the wrong tool for it. The fix is vertical fins that stand across the sun's sideways path, or a screen that drops on the offending side. It is why the honest answer to glare on a west terrace is rarely a bigger roof and often a side element the roof cannot provide.

The chimney you did not mean to build

There is a second reason the moving blade beats the solid lid, and it is about heat, not light. A solid roof stops the sun but also traps the warm air that pools beneath it on a still day, so the shaded space can still feel stifling. Angled louvres do something a solid panel cannot: the gaps let the hottest air, which rises, escape upward while the blades still block the direct beam. The pergola shades and vents at the same time, turning the roof into a loose chimney rather than a lid. When the weather turns, the blades rotate closed, their overlapping edges shed rain into an internal gutter, and the same structure that was a sieve an hour earlier becomes a reasonably tight cover — though not a sealed one, since wind-driven rain still enters from the open sides.

Fixed compromise or moving part

None of this requires motors. A fixed brise-soleil set to a single well-chosen angle is cheap, has nothing to break, and lasts decades; its cost is that the one angle is always a compromise between the seasons. An adjustable louvre buys year-round optimisation — bright and open in December, steeply shut against the June glare, vented on a hot still evening — at the price of a mechanism to maintain. The bioclimatic versions add a sun sensor that rotates the blades automatically as the light shifts, which is convenient but changes nothing about the underlying physics.

Design for your own sky

The practical takeaway is that a shading structure cannot be bought off a chart; it has to be set against your own latitude and orientation. Work out the sun's noon altitude at the summer and winter solstices for where you actually live, note which way the space faces, and the required blade angle and blade direction follow from that. Get those right and a modest pergola will outperform a far larger solid roof in every season. Get them wrong and the most expensive lid in the catalogue will still bake you at breakfast and darken your winter afternoons.
