Kengo Kuma Builds by Losing: Particlization as a Method, Not a Mood
A 2026 Singapore exhibition reframes Kengo Kuma's lifelong instinct to let buildings disappear as a precise construction method: break the mass into thousands of small parts so the site itself can pass through.
The architect who builds by losing
For most of the modern era, a building announced itself by standing apart from its surroundings: a solid, legible object set down on a site. Kengo Kuma has spent a career arguing the opposite. His buildings try to disappear into place, and in early 2026 he gave that lifelong instinct a sharper name. The New Art Museum Singapore is showing MAKERU Architecture — The Ecology of Rhythm and Particles, curated by Yuko Hasegawa and running from 24 January to 14 June 2026. Makeru is the Japanese verb to lose, to be defeated, to yield. The show frames yielding not as humility or retreat but as a rigorous position: a method that amplifies the forces already present on a site rather than overpowering them.
That reframing matters, because Kuma is often misread as a romantic who simply likes natural materials. The profile worth telling is more technical. Losing, in his work, is a construction strategy with repeatable rules.
Particlization: breaking the mass into grains
The engine of that strategy is a process Kuma calls particlization. Instead of treating a wall as a continuous mass, he breaks it into thousands of small, repeated members — thin timber slats, louvers, woven strips, stacked sticks, hung tiles — until the surface stops reading as a solid plane and becomes texture, light and shadow. The practical effect is porosity: light, air and sound pass through the building instead of stopping at its face.
Kuma has described the conviction behind this almost as a law of perception. Without particlizing a material, he argues, we cannot really feel its vibrancy; and a material broken down far enough becomes transient, like a rainbow. The sentence sounds poetic, but it is also a design brief. It tells you the unit should be small, the repetition relentless, and the join honest.
Four buildings, one grammar
The method is easiest to read across four very different projects.
The Great Bamboo Wall, completed near Beijing in 2002, was the breakthrough. Asked to build on steep terrain beside the Great Wall, Kuma rejected the wall as a model of solidity and chose cheap bamboo of the kind used for Chinese scaffolding. Ranked in close vertical rows, the bamboo turns the envelope into a permeable screen that lets light and air filter through, unifying inside and out rather than sealing them apart.
The GC Prostho Museum Research Center in Kasugai, completed in 2010, pushes the idea to its structural limit. Kuma took a traditional Hida Takayama toy, the cidori — interlocking wooden sticks that lock together without glue or nails — and scaled it into architecture. Members of roughly six centimetres square are assembled into a continuous three-dimensional lattice on a fifty-centimetre grid. The whole building is, in effect, one particle repeated until it becomes a room.
V&A Dundee, opened in 2018, proves the grammar survives in heavy material. Its cliff-inspired walls are clad in around 2,500 precast cast-stone panels, hung horizontally on curving surfaces. Individually the panels are mass; arranged in layered bands with gaps between them, they dissolve into striated shadow, the way rock strata do on the Scottish coast.
The Japan National Stadium, completed in 2019, applies the same logic at civic scale. Kuma reinterprets the deep eaves of traditional Japanese architecture as a stacked succession of slanting bands clad in larch and cedar from certified forests. The layered timber breaks the vast roofline into rhythm and channels breezes down toward the seats — particlization doing environmental work, not only visual work.
Yielding as amplification
What links these buildings to the MAKERU idea is that porosity lets the environment in on purpose. A permeable envelope admits humidity, heat, sound and weather, so the building has to negotiate with them. Kuma treats that negotiation as the point. The Singapore show gathers inhabitable tea rooms, full-scale mockups and immersive models to argue that a yielding architecture amplifies existing forces — humidity, climate, noise, cultural memory, material irregularity — rather than erasing them. A column that tapers, a screen that filters, a joint left visible: each is a place where the building gives way and, in giving way, becomes specific to where it stands.
What a designer can take from it
For anyone shaping interiors, the lesson is portable and does not require a famous commission. Prefer a screen to a wall where you can; let a divider filter light and sound instead of blocking them outright. Build depth from the repetition of a small, honest element — a batten, a reed, a slat — rather than from a single dramatic surface. Start from what the place already offers: its light, its local material, its sounds. Kuma spent forty years proving that a building grows more rooted the more it is willing to lose, and that a surface made of many small parts will almost always feel more alive than one made of a single piece.
