The NASA study that made spider plants famous was run in a sealed box; at the scale of a real room, your foliage barely touches the air. Here is what plants genuinely do for a space, and how that should change where you put them.

The myth that refuses to wilt

In 1989 researchers at NASA sealed a handful of common houseplants into small Plexiglas chambers, injected a single pollutant such as formaldehyde or benzene, and measured how much the leaves and soil absorbed over a few hours. The results were striking, and the message travelled far beyond the space programme it was written for: a spider plant here, a peace lily there, and your living room would breathe easier. Nearly forty years later that promise is still printed on nursery labels and repeated in shopping guides every winter. At the scale of an actual room, though, it is almost entirely wrong.

What the sealed box left out

The problem was never the measurement. It was the container. A NASA test chamber has no windows, no door cracked for a draught, no mechanical ventilation trading stale air for fresh. A real home does little else but exchange air. In 2019 two environmental engineers at Drexel University, Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring, went back through twelve published chamber studies and recalculated their 196 experiments using the clean air delivery rate, or CADR, the same metric used to rate air purifiers. Translated into that common language, the average potted plant cleared roughly 0.023 cubic metres of air per hour. A modest portable purifier manages something closer to 100. To match the air handling of an ordinary building, or even a couple of open windows, you would need somewhere between ten and a thousand plants per square metre of floor. For a typical 140-square-metre home the figure lands near 680 plants: a greenhouse, not a living room. Ventilation dilutes indoor pollutants far faster than any leaf can absorb them, so the foliage never gets the chance to matter.

So why keep them at all

Because the plants were solving a different problem than the one on the label. Two well-established strands of environmental psychology explain what actually happens when greenery enters a room. Stress Reduction Theory holds that contact with natural elements lowers physiological arousal — heart rate, blood pressure, the low hum of tension — within minutes. Attention Restoration Theory argues that natural scenes invite a soft, effortless kind of looking that lets the brain's directed-attention system recover from fatigue. Neither depends on a single molecule of formaldehyde being absorbed. A landmark field study by Marlon Nieuwenhuis, Craig Knight and Alex Haslam compared lean, bare offices with the same spaces enriched by plants and recorded a roughly 15 percent rise in productivity, alongside gains in concentration, workplace satisfaction and, tellingly, perceived air quality. The plants did not clean the air. They made people feel, and perform, as though it had been cleaned.

Placement is the real design decision

This changes the brief completely. If the benefit is perceptual rather than chemical, then where a plant sits matters far more than how many you own. A plant works when it falls within the field of view: in the sightline from the desk you work at, the sofa you unwind on, the bed you wake in. Position greenery where the eye naturally rests during focused tasks, so the restorative glance is there without hunting for it. Use it to soften the hard geometry a room accumulates: the sharp corner, the blank return of wall beside a doorway, the edge of a tall cabinet. A single well-placed specimen at eye level in a reading nook earns more than a dozen pots lined up on a windowsill behind you, where you never actually see them.

The point where more becomes less

More greenery is not linearly better. A 2023 study in the journal Buildings tested how the volume ratio, layout and leaf size of interior plants affected workers' attention recovery, and found a clear optimum rather than a straight line: moderate, legible planting restored attention best, while dense, high-coverage greenery pushed arousal back up and, in some multisensory conditions, actively distracted. The calm you are chasing lives in the middle of the dial. A few generous, healthy plants read as restful; a crowded indoor jungle reads as one more thing to manage.

Let each element do its actual job

None of this is a case against houseplants. It is a case for honesty about what they are for. If your concern is genuinely air quality, the levers are ventilation, source control and filtration: open the window, run a purifier sized to the room, choose low-emission finishes and furniture. Ask the fiddle-leaf fig to do instead the thing it is quietly excellent at — steadying your pulse, holding your attention, and telling you, every time you look up, that this is a place worth being in.
