The car park that stopped needing a hose

In 1991 Beth Chatto began planting a former visitor car park at her nursery in Elmstead Market, Essex — one of the driest corners of Britain, with under 500 millimetres of rain a year. The ground was gravel and rubble. She improved it lightly, chose plants that come from dry places, watered them in once, and then, famously, never watered the garden again. More than thirty years and over two hundred species later, that gravel garden is still going without a hose, and it has quietly become the most influential answer to a question every gardener now faces: how do you keep a garden alive through hotter, drier summers without pouring water into the ground?

The answer is turning into a full-blown movement. Across the 2025 show season, Mediterranean and gravel-based planting dominated, and designers are openly rethinking what plants should grow in. Nigel Dunnett has spoken about a surge of interest in growing directly in sand and gravel rather than in topsoil at all. The old herbaceous border — rich soil, dense planting, a sprinkler running through July — is starting to look like a relic of a wetter climate.

Why the dry mulch does the work

The counter-intuitive heart of a gravel garden is that a layer of dry stone keeps the soil beneath it moist. Bare soil loses water constantly: moisture rises to the surface by capillary action and evaporates. A five-to-seven-centimetre blanket of loose gravel breaks that chain. The top few centimetres of stone dry out and stay dry, and a dry surface cannot wick water upward, so the damp soil below is effectively sealed off from the sun and wind. Estimates put the reduction in evaporation as high as seventy percent.

The same layer suppresses weeds — annual seedlings that land in dry gravel struggle to reach soil — and it lets heavy rain soak straight in rather than sheeting off into drains, which matters as much in a downpour as in a drought. Over time earthworms drag the surface stones down into the soil, opening its structure and improving drainage further.

One rule is non-negotiable, and it is the mistake most people make: do not lay a weed membrane under the gravel. Fabric blocks the self-seeding that gives this style its loose, ever-shifting character, it stops plants rooting out and spreading, and within a few years silt and leaf litter settle on top of it to form their own weed bed while the membrane itself frays into an eyesore. A planted gravel garden is not a landscaped car park; the gravel is a growing medium, not a lid.

Right plant, right place — not more water

Chatto's whole philosophy fits in four words: 'right plant, right place'. Instead of amending a site to suit a fixed plant list, you read the site — its light, its drainage, its exposure — and choose plants already adapted to it. For a gravel garden that means species from dry, sunny, stony habitats: lavender, rosemary and cistus from the Mediterranean scrub; sedums and euphorbias that store water in their tissues; achillea and other deep-rooted perennials; and airy grasses such as Stipa tenuissima that read the slightest breeze. These plants want poor, sharp-draining ground. Feed them or overwater them and they flop, rot, or bolt.

The design discipline that goes with this is hydrozoning — grouping plants by their water needs so nothing thirsty is stranded among the drought-lovers. Get the grouping right and the whole planting can share one regime: none. The gaps between plants matter as much as the plants themselves; a gravel garden is read partly as sculpture, each specimen given room to show its shape against the pale stone.

From the show ground to the back garden

What made this a fringe interest for decades — you needed Chatto's dry Essex site — is now mainstream because the climate has moved to meet it. Show gardens in 2025 leaned hard into resilient, low-water planting and into soft landscaping over paving, partly because open, planted ground cools a garden and absorbs rain where a paved yard bakes and floods. Gardens built around dune and gravel formations, and drought-adapted species like the rock rose Cistus purpureus, were among the most talked-about of the year. The message filtering down to domestic gardens is consistent: less hard surface, less irrigation, less feeding, and a palette chosen to survive on rainfall alone.

Building one that lasts

The method is undramatic. Clear the ground of perennial weeds first. On heavy soil, fork in grit or fine gravel to open the structure before laying a generous mulch — ten centimetres or more where drainage is poor. Plant directly through the gravel into the improved soil, easing the stone aside and settling the rootball at the level it grew. Soak each plant thoroughly when it goes in, and keep an eye on it through its first summer while the roots reach down. Then stop. The one-time establishment watering is the whole irrigation budget.

The first year asks for a little hand-weeding. By the second, the planting knits together, self-seeds into the gravel, and begins to look after itself — plants drifting to the spots that suit them, exactly as they would in the wild. The result is not a garden that merely survives drought but one that prefers it: cheaper to run, kinder to the water table, and, on the evidence of a thirty-year-old car park in Essex, capable of outliving the habits it replaces.
