Wood Calms a Room by the Coverage, Not the Amount
The stress-lowering effect of exposed wood is real and measured, but it flattens near 45 percent visible-grain coverage — so the design decision is a ratio, not a quantity.
The One Biophilic Element You Can Measure on a Body
Most of what we call biophilic design is argued from feeling. Plants, daylight, natural texture, a view of trees — we sense they help, and a growing literature agrees, but the mechanism is often soft. Wood is the exception. Among the materials of a room, timber is the one whose effect on the nervous system has been recorded directly, in controlled rooms, with blood-pressure cuffs and skin sensors. That evidence is unusually specific, and it says something most timber-loving renovations get wrong: the calm wood delivers does not keep rising the more of it you use.
The Room That Was Forty-Five Percent Wood
The clearest number comes from a 2007 study by Tsunetsugu, Miyazaki and Sato, who built full-size living rooms of about thirteen square metres and clad their surfaces with visible-grain wood at three levels — none at all, roughly forty-five percent, and about ninety percent — then measured people sitting in each. Blood pressure fell in the wood rooms. But the two wood ratios did not behave the same way. The near-total ninety-percent room produced a sharp early drop in blood pressure yet was rated, subjectively, as less comfortable, even oppressive. The forty-five-percent room lowered blood pressure and was judged the most pleasant of the three. The middle ratio, not the maximum, was the one where the body relaxed and the mind agreed.
Why More Wood Is Not More Calm
That result points to a dose-response that flattens, and then turns. Wood works on us partly through contrast — warm grain read against a cooler, plainer ground, light against shade, one natural plane against another material. Wrap a room in timber on every surface and the contrast collapses; the space reads dark and cave-like, the grain stops being an event and becomes a wall. The physiological benefit is not proportional to the number of square metres of oak. It is closer to a threshold effect: enough wood to register as a natural presence, held against enough of something else to let it breathe.
The Stress You Can See in the Skin
A second strand of research measured the autonomic side directly. In a University of British Columbia study, David Fell placed one hundred and nineteen people in four office setups — wood and plants, wood alone, plants alone, and a bare control — and tracked skin conductance and heart timing through a baseline, a deliberately stressful task, and a recovery. Skin conductance is a clean read on sympathetic arousal, the fight-or-flight branch. The wood rooms showed lower sympathetic activation during the stressful task, and the lowest readings came when wood and plants were combined. The nervous system, in other words, treated a wooden room as a place to stand down.
The Evidence Is Getting More Rigorous
Older wood-and-wellbeing research leaned on small samples and self-report, and it deserved the skepticism. The newer work is tighter. A 2023 randomised controlled trial by Ojala and colleagues, run in a wooden office room against a matched control, found clearly lower anxiety by the end of a session in the timber space. A 2024 cross-over study using heart-rate-variability measures reported improved psychophysiological balance in wooden interiors. The picture that survives the better methods is not that wood is a cure, but that a wood-rich room measurably shifts the body toward rest — modestly, reliably, and more like nature exposure than like a plain painted equivalent.
Grain, Not Just Species
The response tracks what the eye can see. Woods with visible, moving grain — oak, ash, walnut, cedar — provoke a stronger reaction than very tight, uniform timbers or the printed melamine that imitates them. Matte finishes hold the effect better than high gloss, which flips the surface into a reflective plane and reads as plastic. This is why a photograph of grain, or a laminate that mimics it, does not do the same work: the benefit seems bound up in the real, slightly irregular natural pattern, the same mid-complexity that makes people relax in front of foliage and firelight.
Designing to the Ratio
The practical instruction is almost the opposite of the current instinct to drench a room in warm wood. Count the surfaces the eye actually lands on and aim for something between a third and just under half of them in real, visible-grain timber — a slatted ceiling over the sofa, a headboard wall, a run of joinery, a floor read together with a table. Then stop, and let the rest of the room be plaster, stone, textile or paint, so the wood keeps its contrast. Concentrate the timber where the body settles and the gaze rests, not evenly across every plane. The goal is presence, not saturation.
The 2026 Correction
As the decade turns away from cool grey minimalism toward earth-rooted, tactile rooms, timber is having its moment, and the temptation is to answer a beige past with wall-to-wall wood. The measured evidence quietly argues for restraint. The room that calms you is not the one with the most wood. It is the one with the right amount, in real grain, set against something else — a ratio, held on purpose.
