Cane is the skin, not the pole
Start by separating two words that designers use loosely. Rattan is a climbing palm that grows in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, Africa and Australasia; its solid pole is what gets bent into the frames of chairs and headboards. Cane is the thin outer bark peeled from that same pole and then woven into flat sheets. What everyone now calls cane webbing is that woven skin, sold by the roll or the sheet, usually in an open hexagonal pattern that reads almost like lace. Set into a cabinet door, open cane lets air move through the carcass, which is why it suits the exact places a solid door struggles: a media console full of hot electronics that needs to vent, a linen cupboard that must not trap damp, a larder that wants airflow. It filters light instead of blocking it, so a tall cabinet stops reading as a wall of mass and starts to glow softly from within when lit. And it sheds weight, both literal and visual. A sheet of pre-woven cane is soaked until pliable, pressed into a routed groove around the edge of a frame or panel, and locked in place with a thin reed spline; as the cane dries it shrinks and pulls itself drum-tight. That groove-and-spline method is what makes cane a realistic weekend retrofit for a plain cabinet door rather than a job for a specialist, and it is why so many 2026 makeovers start with an existing flat-panel console. The failure modes are equally worth knowing. Cane hates a swing between wet and dry: in an unheated or steamy room it can sag, and in very dry heat it can split, so a bathroom or a radiator-side cabinet is the wrong home for it.
