For twenty years the open plan was the default upgrade: knock the ground floor into one room, let the kitchen, dining and living areas share a single volume, and watch the daylight travel from the front window to the back. In a small home the appeal was obvious. Fewer walls meant more borrowed light, longer sightlines and the illusion of square metres that were never really there. Then people started living in these rooms full time. The extractor fan competed with a phone call. The smell of last night's cooking reached the sofa. A child's homework happened a metre from the television. With no walls to absorb sound or hold heat, the open plan turned out to be one large problem wearing the disguise of freedom.

Broken-plan living is the correction, and in 2026 it is the layout designers reach for first. The idea is simple to state and harder to execute well: divide the open volume into zones without ever building a full-height, solid wall. Keep the light and the flow; buy back the acoustic, thermal and visual separation that the open plan gave away. What makes it interesting is that every device on the menu trades a different, measurable amount of connection for a different gain. The skill is choosing the right one.

Glass is the divider that keeps every lumen

The signature move of the broken plan is the internal glazed screen — the slim black steel-look frame, Crittall and its imitators, run as an interior partition rather than an exterior window. It is popular for a precise reason. A solid wall stops light dead; a glazed screen stops almost none of it, letting daylight reach deep into a narrow plan and cutting the reliance on lamps during the day. Fit the frame with acoustic glass and it does something a plain opening cannot: it dampens the noise of the kitchen or the home office while keeping the two zones in full view of each other. It is not soundproof, and honest designers say so, but the drop from open-plan clatter to glazed-off murmur is real. In a compact urban house, internal glazing is often the only way to carve a study or a quiet snug out of a through-room without turning it dark.

A step in the floor is a wall you can see over

Where glass separates by sound, a change of level separates by ground. Drop a seating area seven to twelve inches below the main floor, or raise a sleeping platform above it, and you have made the strongest zone boundary available short of building. The step itself is the divider — the eye and the body both register the threshold — yet nothing blocks the view across the room and no light is lost. The sunken conversation pit, a mid-century idea, is back precisely because it zones without enclosing. In a small flat the same logic scales down to a single raised plinth that turns a corner into a bedroom, with storage swallowed into the void beneath the step. The catch is structural and regulatory: level changes are costly, and building codes are unforgiving about trip hazards and headroom.

The half wall, the soffit, the borrowed floor

Between the glass screen and the split level sits a family of gentler dividers, each surrendering a little more or a little less. A half-height wall — waist to shoulder — hides the kitchen mess from the dining table and gives a heating zone an edge, while leaving the ceiling open and the light intact; it is cheaper than glazing, though its cost and code fit vary. A dropped ceiling soffit over the kitchen, or a change of floor finish from tile to timber, separates nothing physically and everything perceptually: the brain reads the shift as a doorway that is not there. Shelving units, bookcases and the modular island all do partition duty too, adding storage in the same gesture. None of these hold sound the way glass does; all of them keep the room feeling whole.

Match the device to the nuisance

The reason broken-plan works, and the reason it is not simply open-plan with props, is that its devices are not interchangeable. Sound wants mass or sealed glass; a soffit will not touch it. Cooking mess wants a screen at eye height; a floor-finish change will not hide it. Heat loss wants a smaller sealed volume; an implied boundary will not hold a single degree. So the design question in a compact home is never should I divide this room, but what exactly is going wrong here — the noise, the smell, the cold, the lack of a door to shut for a call — and which single device answers that without spending the light. Get the match right and a small home reads as generous and behaves as private. Get it wrong and you have paid for a wall that solves the wrong thing.
