Dry-Laid and Sealing-Free: Why 20mm Porcelain Is Taking the Terrace From Stone and Timber
A single load-bearing 20mm porcelain slab, laid dry on adjustable pedestals, gives a terrace the frost-proof, fade-proof, sealing-free surface that mortar-bedded stone and oiled timber cannot — and keeps the whole deck liftable for the drainage and services underneath.

A surface that stopped drinking water
Outdoor stone has one quiet vulnerability that decides most of its problems: it drinks. Many natural stones absorb between 2 and 10 percent of their weight in water, and that water is the mechanism behind almost everything that goes wrong outdoors — the winter freeze that spalls a slab from the inside, the wine and leaf-tannin stains that will not lift, the green film of algae that takes hold in a north-facing corner. Fired porcelain rated for outdoor use absorbs 0.5 percent or less, low enough to be classed impervious. Nothing meaningful gets in, so nothing much can go wrong from within.
That single number reorganises the whole maintenance calendar. A stone terrace usually wants sealing at installation and re-sealing every couple of years to stay stain- and frost-resistant; skip it and the surface starts to fail. A 20mm porcelain deck is never sealed, because there is no open pore structure to protect. Freeze-thaw testing puts it as frost-free across a range from roughly minus 51C to plus 60C with its properties unchanged, which means the same specification works on a Milanese roof terrace and a coastal patio without a different detail.
Twenty millimetres, laid dry
The format that turned this into an outdoor product rather than a bathroom one is the 2cm, or 20mm, through-body slab: a single load-bearing layer, not a thin tile glued to a screed. Independent breaking loads for these pavers are commonly quoted between about 2,000 and 3,000 pounds, which is what lets them span across supports rather than sit in mortar.
That span is the real shift. A 20mm paver can be set dry on adjustable pedestals — small screw-height feet that carry each corner. The pedestals level a sloping or uneven base without a concrete bed, hold the slabs a few millimetres apart so rain drains straight through the joints, and leave a ventilated cavity underneath. Crucially, the deck stays reversible: any slab lifts out by hand, so the plumbing, irrigation lines and electrical runs a designer routes under a terrace remain reachable for the life of the building. A mortar-bedded stone patio buries all of that permanently. The same slab can also be sand- or gravel-set at grade, or bonded over an existing concrete pad, so one material covers the garden path, the pool surround and the fifth-floor roof deck.
The surface that never changes — for better and worse
Because the colour is fired through the body rather than printed on top, outdoor porcelain is colourfast: UV does not fade it, so a south-facing terrace holds its tone while a timber deck silvers and an oiled hardwood needs re-oiling every season. Hardness sits high on the Mohs scale, around 7 to 8, so dragged furniture and dropped tools rarely mark it. R11 is the common slip rating for the textured outdoor finishes, which is what makes it defensible around a pool.
The flip side is worth stating plainly. A porcelain deck at year fifteen reads essentially identical to the day it was laid — same colour, same precision — and for a certain kind of project that permanence is exactly the point. But it is the opposite of stone, which oxidises, leaches and softens into a patina some clients love and pay for. Porcelain does not age; it simply persists. It is also brittle under sharp point impact and needs diamond tooling to cut, so it is not a forgiving material for the untrained. And a colourway laid today may be discontinued in a decade, which makes matching a single cracked slab harder than quarrying more of a stone that has existed for millions of years.
Where the floor reads as one
The strongest design argument is not durability but continuity. Most collections now ship the same look in a 10mm indoor tile and a 20mm outdoor paver, so a living room can run straight out onto a terrace as one visual plane. Get three details right and the eye stops registering a threshold at all: keep the tile format and laying direction identical inside and out, align the grout joints so the lines carry across the door, and detail a flush, level threshold with a linear drainage channel at the opening rather than a step. That flush junction is not only a modern look — it is what makes a terrace accessible for a wheelchair or a pram, and it is the detail that ages well as its owners do.
Choosing well
Porcelain is rarely the cheapest option on paper — installed, it tends to land around 12 to 20 dollars per square foot, competitive with mid-range stone but above basic concrete. The case for it is a lifecycle one: no sealing, no fading, no rot, a liftable serviceable deck, and a surface that looks the same in fifteen years. Manufacturing it is energy-intensive, though the slab is fully recyclable and its long, maintenance-free life offsets much of that upfront cost. Specify the 20mm through-body slab, insist on a rectified edge and an R11 finish for anything near water, and treat the pedestal layout — falls, drainage, perimeter restraint — as the actual engineering. Get that substructure right and the terrace becomes the one outdoor surface a client can genuinely forget about.
